Check Your Graymail and Junk Mail

Folders Often!

Plus: Using the Report Button To Manage Phish, Junk and Not Junk Emails; and How To Train Graymail

Since our move to Abnormal Security in November, two new folders now appear in your Outlook folder list: Graymail and Junk Email. Check these folders daily so that you don’t miss an email that might have been miscategorized.

Understanding Your New Folders

Graymail: Abnormal Security moves bulk-type emails that you’ve subscribed to, or otherwise interacted with, into this folder. This includes newsletters, promotions, marketing/sales emails and social media notifications.

Junk Email: Microsoft Defender moves messages that are obviously spam or unwanted bulk mail into this folder.

  • In order to access links in emails in the Junk Email folder, you will need to move these emails to your Inbox.
  • Note that emails will be deleted from the Junk Email folder after 30 days.

Pro Tip: Move these folders to the top of your Outlook folder list so you can quickly check them regularly. You can also move them into your Favorites, as shown here.

Training Graymail Behavior

If an email you want to keep lands in your Graymail folder, drag and drop the email into your inbox. Abnormal Security will learn from this action and deliver future emails from this sender directly to your inbox.

Use the Microsoft Report button to manage Phish and

Junk Email

TO REPORT PHISHING (for emails that appear malicious or deceptive)

  1. Highlight the email you want to report.
  2. From the drop-down Report menu, choose “Report Phishing.”
  3. The message will be moved from your inbox to the Deleted Items folder and will be sent for advanced analysis.
  4. You will soon receive an email from BW Information Security that provides an assessment, made through generative AI, of your reported email. You can reply directly to the email with any follow-up questions.

TO REPORT JUNK (for spam and unwanted messages)

  1. Highlight the email you want to report.
  2. From the drop-down Report menu, choose “Report Junk.”
  3. The message will be moved from your inbox to your Junk Email folder.
  4. This action will help train your system to deliver future emails from that sender directly to the Junk Email folder.

TO REPORT NOT JUNK (for legitimate emails that have accidentally been delivered to your Junk Email folder)

  1. From within the Junk Email folder, highlight the email that is legitimate (and therefore not junk).
  2. From the drop-down Report menu, choose “Not Junk.”
  3. The message will be moved from your Junk Email folder to your Inbox
  4. This action will help train your system to recognize similar emails as safe and deliver them to your Inbox in the future.

Note: You can also manage Junk and Not Junk by simply right-clicking the messages. Click here for instructions.
